This community, elevation 4,758 feet, is toward the north end of the county, on Us-g7. The Southern Pacific Cascade Line station Knott was established in 1924 during construction and changed to Chemult when the line was opened to traffic in 1926. Chemult post office was opened in 1926, and the junction with the Burlington Northern was done in 1834. The name is that of a Klamath chief who was one of the 26 who signed the treaty of October 14, 1864' the geography of the locality is shown on the USGS map of the Chemult quadrangle.
